How To- Plan for Retirement, Regardless of Your Age

Planning for retirement is easier when you start younger (do I need to repeat that for my young adults who feel like retirement is just so far away???), but even if you are past your “young adult” years, it is better to start today than to wait.

How to get started?

For the young adults, start investing 10% of your after-tax income.

For the rest of you:

How much will you have to live on each month if you retired tomorrow?

Do you have any idea?

Take a minute. Check it out, then come back.

Is it at least as much as your current monthly expenses, less any “work-specific” expenses that you would not have if you were not working (like gas for the commute)?

What is the difference between where you currently are and where you want/need to be?

Now for the hard part…

What do you need to do to get rid of that difference?

Do you need to pay off a car loan? mortgage? credit cards?

Do you need to save or invest A LOT more money?

The good news is that once you know where you are and where you want to be you can take small action steps to close the gap.

You can do this.
