How To- Not Blow the Budget this Christmas

PSA: You DO NOT have to go into debt to make your family, friends, and loved ones happy this holiday season.
Choose a budget that works for you and stick to it.

If you are concerned how others will react, you can always let them know ahead of time.

Or you can tell them you are choosing to make memories.

After all, you can make memories for free.

Perhaps you all gather to make Grandma’s cookie (or fudge) recipe
or decorate cookies or a gingerbread house together
or maybe you go caroling
or volunteer at your favorite local charity
or make cards for soldiers, nursing home residents, or those who are alone
or decorate the tree
or anything else that works with your schedule and interests.

If you really feel the need to purchase something, keep it to a predetermined amount- and stick to it.

There will always be “one more” thing that you want to add at the last minute. Be sure you decide what you are going to return if you feel it is too perfect to pass up.

And, while using a rewards credit card that you pay off before any interest is charged is the “best” way to go, if using that credit card will encourage you to overspend, leave the card at home and use cash.

Lastly, do not get caught up in the competition of trying to keep up or beat someone else. It really is not worth it.

I remember when Morgan was little and received so many presents she did not want to open them all… even though we started days before Christmas. It took the joy out of the season. I think she appreciated the money that was invested for her much more and did not miss all those presents (I know I appreciated it more)!
